Protect Yourself from UV Rays!

Protect Yourself from UV Rays!

Soaking up the sun feels great, but too much exposure to UV rays can lead to skin damage and even skin cancer. The good news: With a few simple habits, you can stay safe and enjoy the sunshine! These tips can help protect yourself and your family.

Use Sunscreen Properly

  1. Wear sunscreen daily. Choose broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher—even on cloudy days.
  2. Reapply often. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
  3. Keep kids safe. Kids are more sensitive to UV rays. Make sure they wear sunscreen (and protective clothing) designed for their skin.

Take Precautions Outside

  1. Seek shade. Try to stay in the shade during peak sun hours (10 am to 2 pm).
  2. Be extra cautious near water, sand, and snow. These surfaces reflect UV rays and can increase your exposure.
  3. Cover up. Wear lightweight and long-sleeved clothing, widebrimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection.

Additional Tips

  1. Avoid tanning beds. They can cause skin damage and raise the risk of skin cancer, just like the sun.
  2. Check your skin regularly. Look for new or changing moles and spots and see a dermatologist if you notice anything suspicious.
  3. Schedule smartly. To stay cooler and more comfortable, plan to do outdoor activities in the early morning, late afternoon, or evening when the heat and sun’s rays are less intense.
